I’m making a series of videos where someone tells me two stories on a particular subject. One story will be true and one will be a lie. We’ll have to see if we can spot the cues to determine which story is true and which story is a fabrication.

If you’d like to see those video, click the link – Spot the Lie Series or click on one of the images below.

Would you like to help us with our “Spot the Lie” series?

If you would like to help me out with the “Spot the Lie” series of videos, thank you very much. Here’s how you can help.

Overview:

  1. Shoot a video telling me a little about yourself. (This is to get a baseline)
  2. Pick a subject
  3. Tell a true story and a made-up story about that subject.
  4. Tell us which story was true and which was false.

If you want to participate in this project, please follow these instructions. If you have this overview in front of you, it will help to ensure that all of the steps are completed.

Here are some story subject ideas:

Your Greatest Fear
— Tell us something that you are afraid of. Why does it scare you?
— Take a minute and come up with a lie. Talk about something that you actually enjoy but tell me it’s your greatest fear and why you’re afraid of it.

An Embarrassing Moment
— Tell me about an embarrassing moment you’ve had.
— Take a minute to come up with a lie and tell me about that made up embarrassing moment.

Your Favorite Food
— What is your favorite food? Why do you like it so much?
— Tell me about your least favorite food, but lie and tell me it’s your favorite and why you like it so much.

A Fond Memory
— Tell me about a fond memory with a close friend or family member?
— Make up a fake story and tell me about this fake fond memory you had.

A Childhood Pet
— Tell me about a pet you had as a child. If you never had a pet, tell me about that. Did you want a pet? What kind of pet did you want and why?
— Take a minute to make up a story about a pet you had as a child.

These are just a few ideas. If you would like to come up with your own topic, that’s fine too. I just need you to pick a subject and then give me one true story and one made up story about that subject.

Instructions for shooting and submitting your videos

Please have these instructions with you when recording the video.

Once you have chosen a subject you would like to share and you have taken some time to come up with some convincing details for your made up story, it’s time to get set up to record video.

If you have a camera and a tripod, that’s great. If not, a web cam or cell phone will be fine. Please make sure that you are well lit and that we will be able to see your head and shoulders in the shot.

Hit the record button and then tell us a little about yourself before sharing your true and made up stories.

Please tell us your:

  • Name
  • Where you’re from
  • Do you have any brothers or sisters?
  • What did you eat for breakfast?
  • What was your favorite subject in school and why?

(Please answer the above questions truthfully, this is so we can get a baseline to see what you look like when you’re telling the truth.)

Now tell us your true story and your fake story in any order you would like. You can start with the made up story and then tell the true story, or you can tell the true story first and then the lie.

Finally, after telling both stories, please tell us which story was true and which was made up.

We’re going to see if we can pick up on your tells and spot the lies.

Once you have recorded the video you can upload it to https://www.dropbox.com/ or some other free cloud storage service and then send me the download link at admin@embracethedecption.com or by using the contact form on this website.

Here is a sample video to give you an idea of how the “Spot the Lie” video submissions should look.

Please note that by submitting your videos to Embrace the Deception you agree to let us use your video for analysing body language cues for signs of truth and deception. Our analysis will then be uploaded to Youtube, posted on our website, and posted to social media.

Thank you for your participation.
